The first chapter contains an introduction to the value of model life tables and their construction. “The INDEPTH Model Life Tables for sub-Saharan Africa is a welcome contribution to the study of African demography and health. The authors have performed a useful task by gathering together and analyzing by a consistent method the data related to mortality structure in Africa.
