Mr. Motherwell, the Editor of "Minstrelsy, Ancient and Modern, ," said, "Fortunate it was for the heroic and legendary song of Scotland that the work was undertaken, and still more fortunate that its execution devolved upon one so well qualified in every respect to do its subject the most ample justice. The most comprehensive modern study of blackface minstrelsy, interesting because he looks more squarely at racial issues and pays a lot of attention to Black-related matters, i.e., chapters on “Images of Negroes in Antebellum Minstrelsy,” “Black Men Take the Stage,” and a “Chronological List of Black Minstrel Troupes ”.
